I have to make a Christmas Eve confession… I am 30 years old, married, with a child of my own, and until this year I had never made a gingerbread house before. I think, maybe, once or twice when I was really small, I may have helped stick a couple of decorations on one of my cousins’ or friends’ gingerbread houses, but I never made one of my own.
But this year, as part of my daughter’s birthday gift, my mother added a gingerbread house kit. It was a pre-made house (which is pretty much my style, because just imagining trying to stick all the walls and roof together makes me shudder), and my daughter was super-excited to decorate it when I hauled it out last night.
It’s not the prettiest gingerbread house in the world; the icing on the roof is a mess, and the door and windows I drew on are crooked and have little peaks of icing sticking out everywhere, and of course my four-year-old didn’t exactly plan out a masterful design for the little candies and gumdrops. But it’s perfect because it’s ours.
Hey, stop dissing your gingerbread house! 😦
It looks fantastic, especially considering your child is only 4! I had never made a gingerbread house until last year. My school held a project in cooking class where we had a couple weeks to make gingerbread houses and it was a competition. Out of two classes (Around 50 people) I came 2nd and was super happy! I don’t have a picture though which I’m sad about…
This was a great post and I hope you and your family have a lovely time this Christmas x
Ah! I wish you had a picture! I actually love gingerbread houses, and the crazy-fancy ones are so much fun to look at. ^_^
A big Merry Christmas to you as well! Next time you make an awesome gingerbread house be sure to come back and share it with me! 😀
I love the look of them but i dont like the taste 😦
Thabk you very much! I’ll be sure to keep that in mind 🙂
I have a confession to make, too. (Since it’s Christmas, and we all have to tell the truth on Christmas, right?)
I’m 35 and have never once had a gingerbread house at my place ever. I’ve only seen them on television or in magazines. This year, the misses, Angie, decided that we were going to make a gingerbread house and then eat it.
My idea was to have a gingerbread man and his wife inside the house looking up with angry faces so that when soneone ate the roof off the house, they would see the dissaproving husband and wife inside. After all, would you want someone to eat your house?
Needless to say, this year it looks as if we’ll be scrapping the plans for the construction of such gingerbread house.
That idea is gold. lol If you ever do it you should definitely take pics as the house gets eaten. XD
For the record, the gingerbread house kit that my mother picked up for us was one of those pre-built ones that you just decorate, and my husband was very disappointed to find out that he couldn’t eat it. lol
