People Have Layers, Just Like Trolls, er…Onions

Memoir Mondays

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “A Mystery Wrapped in an Enigma,” in which we are asked to “Tell us something most people probably don’t know about you.”

Despite the fact that I’ve been putting myself out there on the internet for several years now, I could probably spend all day listing things that most people don’t know about me. For this post, however, I thought I’d share one thing that even some of my closest friends and family might be surprised to hear:

I’m a closet girly-girl.

Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m a tomboy at heart and pretty much always have been. I prefer sweaters and exercise pants to blouses and skirts, I’d pick beer and video games over dinner and dancing, and I’d rather do pretty much anything aside from shopping. (There are going to be a lot of stereotypes in this post, but just bear with me, thanks.) I’m not sporty or masculine by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve just never been very feminine either. I’ve always done my hair whichever way is the absolute easiest, and it used to drive me nuts when my mom would put blush on me for formal events. I was always more “hands-in-the-dirt” than “pinkies-up”, and I was more likely to beat the schoolboys up than run away from them and giggle like a fool. I’ve just never been “girly”.

But somewhere along the line – I’m not exactly sure when – I started having “girly” tendencies. I’ve always enjoyed baths, but I started wanting to take them with loads of bubble bath and lotions and maybe some candles. I could never be bothered with makeup, but I slowly got interested in how to properly apply it and started collecting some nicer stuff. Around the time I started my YouTube channel I also started following other channels, and although most of them are total nerds like me, I also started following some beauty Tubers, and I genuinely love listening to them talk about new products and fashion and the like. I love monsters, of the variety that kill and maim and destroy and terrify, but I also halfway see the attraction of things like “Twilight”.

I guess I’ve slowly developed a kind of split personality, if you will. I’m still a nerdy tomboy who prefers to curl up in jogging pants, watch action and horror movies, curse like a sailor, and would rather save a mouse than scream for someone to kill it. But I’ve also gotten surprisingly good at applying eye make-up, enjoy listening to other girls talk about their favorite brands, love playing with nail color, and have become obsessed with pumpkin spice tea. There’s nothing wrong with any of this, of course…I just think quite a few people would be surprised to hear it. XD

What do most people not know about you? Feel free to share!

  1. I just moved, and my new place has a bathtub (my old place just had a stand-in shower). I haven’t admitted this to anyone yet, but I’m really tempted to go all out with the bubble baths, now that I have the option. Maybe that’s girly, but I don’t care. It sounds relaxing.
